Program & Curriculum Questions

  • What is the Jai Institute for Parenting(JIFP)?

The Jai Institute for Parenting is a leading organization that offers a parent coach certification program, focusing on improving parent-child relationships and empowering families through a science and research-based methodology.

They teach parents to replace power-over strategies ("if you don’t do this, I’ll do this!") or power-under strategies ("I don’t want my child to be upset!") with their Empowered Communication Framework, which provide parents with the ability to parent effectively without using punishments, consequences, threats, bribes or other manipulative tactics that cause emotional and developmental harm to children.

Their mission is to teach parents how to raise emotionally healthy children without compromising values, limits and boundaries.

Their curriculum is based on the work of:

    Dr. Daniel Siegel

    Dr. Ross Greene

    Dr. Laura Markham,

    Adele Faber

    Elaine Mazlish

    Dr. Tina Bryson

    Dr. Mona Delahooke

    Dr Marshall Rosenberg

    Dr Marc Brackett

    Dr Allan Schore

    Lawrence Cohen

    Alfie Kohn

    Dr Stephen Porgess

    Irene Lyon

Note: This is not an exhaustive list.

For details, please read the answers to the next question, "What are the topics covered in JIFP's online curriculum?"

  • What are the topics covered in JIFP's online curriculum?

    Week 1: Reflections & Intentions

    Set your intentions and reflections.

    WEEK 2: Strengths & Values

Identify your goals, strengths, and values. Explore how you support yourself through stress.

WEEK 3: The 10 Pillars of Transformational Parent

Learn about The 10 Pillars of Transformational Parenting, which is what hold us in a secure foundation as we traverse the terrain of conscious, transformational parenting.

    WEEK 4: Attachment Science

Explore your generational patterns of connection, intimacy, and relational safety.

    WEEK 5: Nervous System Science

Learn sensory calming tools for you and your children. The physiology of parenting is the cutting edge of understanding our internal world as parents and the internal world of our children. With understanding, comes calm. With information, comes internal safety.

WEEK 6: Mindsight and Brain Science

Learn common obstacles that keep us from practicing mindsight with our children. Learn seven tools to increase our mindsight.

    WEEK 7: Emotional Intelligence

Dive into how we can support our children’s emotional development. The heart of Empowered Parenting is understanding how our physiology, brain, and emotions work together to create our inner orchestra. Understanding emotional intelligence provides both the parent and the child with inner and outer freedom to live whole, full, exuberant lives together.

    WEEK 8: Empowered Conversations

Use the work of Non-Violent Communication by Marshall Rosenburg, PhD as a guide to have empowered conversations.

    WEEK 9: The PEACE process

Here we combine everything you have learned so far into the Jai Methodology of PEACE.  This methodology can be used in any parenting scenario when conflict arises between children, between a child and parent, or among the entire family.

WEEK 10: Anger and Healthy Aggression

Explore what your anger is communicating with you and learn to express it in a healthy way.

WEEK 11: Playful Parenting and Storytelling

Explore your playful inner self, so you can bring playfulness into parenting, no matter the age.

    WEEK 12: Your Personal Transformation

Reflect on the shifts you have made and how that has influenced the behavior of your children.

  • What are the similarities and differences between the Self-Guided Program and the 12-Week or 8-Week Program?

    Similarity:

The same curriculum created by the Jai Institute for Parenting

    Differences:

    1. The Self-Guided Program does not include 1-on-1 coaching sessions like the other programs do.

    2. Since coaching is not included in the Self-Guided Program, personalized notes & plans based on information from the coaching sessions are also not included.

    3. Without learning about the clients through coaching, I would not know their family dynamics, beliefs, and values.  For this reason, I cannot answer questions specific to their circumstance. Thus, the email support for the Self-Guided Program is limited to questions about the curriculum itself, whereas the email support in the other programs include questions about the curriculum and any parenting challenges in the clients' day-to-day life.

  • Why do you only offer 8-week or 12-week coaching sessions and not single coaching session?

I understand that 8-week or 12-week coaching sessions is a big commitment. However, just like having a personal trainer to achieve fitness goals, we need more than one week to achieve our parenting goals. Achieving significant, lasting results involves changing ingrained parenting patterns, learning and practicing new skills consistently, reflecting on the results, and receiving feedback and support during coaching sessions-all of these take time and dedication.

  • Do the programs touch on parenting a child with ADHD or neuro-diversity?

The programs offered are parent-centric, meaning that they are 100% parent-focused. They do not focus on behavioral modification in children(although children's behavior often change when the parents parent differently). We will explore tools that show clients how to connect deeply with their children, with dignity, honor and mutual respect. Neuro-diverse children benefit greatly when caretakers are given these tools since the skills that can often be more challenging for children on the spectrum (like emotional self-regulation) are being modeled in a consistent, calm, and compassionate way.

How Peaceful Parenting Impacts Neurodivergent Children

  • I have a spirited child. Will I benefit from your program?

Absolutely. The programs focus on empowering the parents so that they can empower their children. Many of the topics covered are especially helpful in parenting a spirited child's temperamental traits such as high persistence, sensitivity, and challenges around adaptability.

  • What is the weekly time commitment for your programs?

The weekly time commitment is, on the average, two to three hours, excluding the one-hour coaching.  Changing ingrained parenting patterns and internalizing new skills require consistent effort and practice.  Clients will reach their desired outcome sooner if they put in this much time, at the minimum; they will get out of the program as much as they put in.

  • How do the programs work?

For the 12-Week Program and the 8-Week Program:

    1.  Each week, starting with week two, clients will watch a video, read a workbook, and answer some questions from the workbook.

-If you'd like a sample of the workbook, feel free to contact me and I can email it to you.

-To get a feel for what the videos (different content from, but a similar style to, the ones in the curriculum) are like, you can click here.

    2.  Clients will email me their answers from the workbook at least 48 hours before our meeting so that I can review them, email clients my feedback, and/or use them to write a plan for our next meeting so that we can make the most out of our time together.

    3.  We will meet at the scheduled day/time via Google Meet.  I will record the meeting so that I can focus 100% on the clients instead of taking notes.

    4.  After the coaching session, I will review the recording and then email clients important notes and a plan of actions, personalized for their specific situation. This way, they will know what to focus on each week.

    5.  Throughout the program, clients can email me to ask any questions they have regarding the curriculum or about their parenting in their day-to-day life, and I'll reply within 48 hours.

    For the Self-Guided Program:

    1.  Clients can go through the program at their own pace.

-If you'd like a sample of the workbook, feel free to contact me and I can email it to you.

-To get a feel for what the videos (different content from, but a similar style to, the ones in the curriculum) are like, you can click here.

    2.  For three months after receiving access to the 12-week curriculum, clients can email me any questions they have about the curriculum, and I'll reply within 48 hours.

  • Where are the coaching sessions?

    Online through Google Meet

  • What are the coaching sessions like?

-First, you will be met with a supportive, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where you can feel comfortable sharing both your triumphs and your struggles.

-We will explore the reasons behind your parenting challenges.

-We will address your challenges by exploring different perspectives, practical tools, and evidence-based strategies that align with your values.

-We will go over any of the week's course material that is important for you.

  • What happens if I can't make it to a scheduled session?

No problem, but please do cancel your session at least 24 hours before the meeting to avoid your session fee being forfeited and reschedule as soon as possible to get your preferred time slot.

  • How do I get started if I'm interested in your parent coaching programs?

Step 1   Contact me so that I can answer any questions you have, learn about your needs, and decide if parent coaching is a good fit for you at this time.  If we decide that it’s not a good fit, I'd be happy to point you in the direction of other resources that may support you at this time.  You can contact me via one of the following three ways:

    1.  Email at linda@parentcoachingwithlinda.com

    2. Contact form here

    3. Free 20-minute Complimentary Call here

For the 12-Week Program or the 8-Week Program

Step 2   If we decide to work together, we will schedule the dates/time that we can mutually agree on for all the sessions.

Step 3   I will email you the Parent Coaching Agreement for you to sign and an invoice for you to make the payment.

Step 4  Within 24 hours after I receive the Parent Coaching Agreement and payment, I will email you your Parent Portal login information, giving you access to the 12-week curriculum.

    For the Self-Guided Program

Step 2  If we decide to work together, I will email you the Client Agreement for you to sign and an invoice for you to make the payment.

Step 3 Within 24 hours after I have received your signed Client Agreement and payment, I will email you your Parent Portal login information, giving you access to the 12-week curriculum.

General Questions

  • What is parent coaching?

Parent coaching is a collaborative process where a parenting coach helps clients heal or improve their relationships with their children.

  • How is coaching different from therapy?

Therapy addresses mental health conditions and past experiences; coaching focuses more on the present and the future.

As a parenting coach, I also help clients to "connect the dots" between their past experiences and present struggles; although we explore the past to understand how it shows up in their current life, the focus is more on the present.

  • What is your parenting style/philosophy?

I practice positive parenting with curiosity, communication, and collaboration instead of punishments, threats, or bribes.

I strive for improvement, not perfection.

I try to model instead of preaching. When I do find myself preaching, I try to "model what I preach".

I believe in treating children, like treating any human being, with respect, dignity, humility, and compassion.

I remind myself to always respect my child's individuality instead of imposing my own definitions of success on him.

I believe that when we interact with our children in ways that make them feel that they are loved for who they are, and that when they can be themselves without fear of being blamed, yelled at/nagged at, criticized, or shamed, they develop a sense of security and trust around us. This trust fosters a desire to share their world with us and a willingness to listen, cooperate, and engage with our beliefs, rules, and values.
