Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

  • What is parent coaching?

Parent coaching is a collaborative and transformative process where a parenting coach helps clients heal or improve their relationships with their children.

  • How is coaching different from therapy?

Therapy addresses mental health conditions and past experiences; coaching focuses more on the present and the future.

As a parenting coach, I also help clients to "connect the dots" between their past experiences and present struggles; although we explore the past to understand how it shows up in their current life, the focus is more on the present.

  • What is your parenting style/philosophy?

I practice positive parenting with curiosity, communication, and collaboration instead of punishments, threats, or bribes.

I strive for improvement, not perfection.

I don't beat myself up when I make mistakes; I just try to learn from them.

I try to model instead of preaching. When I do find myself preaching, I try to "model what I preach".

I believe in treating children, like treating any human being, with respect, dignity, humility, and compassion.

I remind myself to always respect my child's individuality instead of imposing my own definitions of success on him.

I believe that when we interact with our children in ways that make them feel that they are loved for who they are, and that when they can be themselves without fear of being blamed, yelled at/nagged at, criticized, or shamed, they develop a sense of security and trust around us. This trust fosters a willingness to listen, cooperate, and engage with our beliefs, rules, and values.
